Looking back, thanks & updates

Congratulations again to all actors, crew and family on The Gift of the Rebel Elf.  We survived, and the children thrived!  In our observations, the show got tighter and the performances stronger each time, until the last show -- not a hitch!   We didn't plan for 3 shows in 30 hours (with cast members as young as 4), but the weather made plans of its own, and miraculously, every single child made it for all 3 shows and gave it his/her all!!   Even our littlest performers, the Pre-K/Kindergartners (purely voluntary), gave an amazing turnout, with the majority performing in all 3 shows.

December 5th marked the one-year anniversary of our first Drama Club after-school meeting.  Within this year, the students and community of Cornish have created not one, but two musicals, open to all children who wanted to be on or work back stage.   Including last year's graduates, nearly 90 Cornish children have participated in some capacity.  In this short time, we've watched kids who wouldn't come out from behind the curtain last year step into singing and dancing roles this year; kids who wanted only extra parts take leads; kids who didn't speak at the beginning start talking with confidence in front of the group (and loving the spot light!); kids who watched from the bleachers last year get on stage this year, and others step into complicated technical roles.

It was a feat for all to be proud of -- but especially for the families, who performed Olympic medal-worthy acts of schedule-juggling to make it happen.  Thank you.

And an extra special thanks to Amanda Posner for coming back and giving even more this year than last, despite Clara's having graduated.  Amanda devotes such loving attention to the details of each child's costume, wanting so much for them to be comfortable and enjoy their transformations on stage.  Her creative talents know no end, and she may be the first person I've ever met who can go two months without sleep.  And to Clara, who brought her enthusiasm for drama back as a volunteer helper/mentor throughout the fall and during the shows.  Her help and example were so important.

A few quick updates...

*  If you would like to purchase an elf hat, booties, and/or shorts/poodle skirt, they are still available as a fundraiser for future activities.  (There will be extras, so even if your child had a different role, there will likely be elf elements available).

*  For those of you who ordered t-shirts, they should arrive by the end of this week.  I will contact you for delivery.  They are $16 each (check made out to CCPTO, memo: Drama/t-shirt).

*  If your child asks (or inquiring minds want to know), this was the show for the 2014-15 school year.  (Sigh of relief? :-)  Amanda and I will enjoy a slow exploration of possibilities for the 2015-16 school year.  We welcome volunteers to join us in this mad (and very rewarding) endeavor!  Let us know if you'd like to help out next year.

*  Though we are tied up with other projects the remainder of this year, we would like to continue to offer an after-school Drama Club periodically for the remainder of this year.  We plan to hold the first meeting Jan. 13, Monday from 2:45-4:00p.  It will be open to Upper Wing + 4th graders, and it will be casual -- kids are welcome to come when they can.  We will start by gathering their feedback on Rebel Elf and collect their ideas about activities they'd like to do with the Club this winter/spring (possibilities include: field trips to plays, inviting visitors from local theaters, film, scene study, stand-up comedy, etc.)  We will keep you posted on the schedule for Drama Club meetings as it evolves.

*  A cast's family member asked for the text of Samantha's remarks to the cast and crew at the end of the last show. Here they are again (As you may have noted, they are derived from our soundtrack):

Boy can you Rock it, you can roll it, do the stomp and even stroll it.  You make all my cares drift right into space...And you can play a guitar, and drums, and tamborine, and keyboard,  just like a ringing a bell.  You sure Got your motor running, looking for adventure, You truly are like a true Nature’s child, born to be wild.  We know you ain’t gonna do us wrong, and you deserve a heap of R-E-S-P-E-C-T for what you did tonight.  Yesterday, you weren’t half the men and women you are today.  And you definitely hold the key to love and fear in your hand, and Got Together and Loved one another.  We lent you our ears, and you sang us some songs, and you did not sing out of key.  When we were down and troubled, you called our names and you were there.  And you made us believe in the magic of young girls’ and boy’s souls.  You helped out, you were kind, you tried hard, and you showed us that All We Need Is… Love, Love Love....

Very happy holidays to all.

Elf Hats and Booties:Amanda would like to offer the hats and booties for sale to support future Drama Club activities.

3)  Encourage your children to get to SLEEP EARLY tonight & tomorrow to stay healthy for a packed 3-show run in 2 days!

4)  FEED your child before they come to the Evening Shows.   If anyone can donate snacks in case a child misses dinner, that would be great.

5)  Upper Wing Girl Elves:   Come to show with your hair in a ponytail at the nape of your neck.  Also, bring your own hair brushes and elastics.  We may not share.

6)  Send any COSTUME ELEMENTS we've requested with your child to school tomorrow, labelled if possible.

We have been moved to tears (literally, ask the kids!) by the dedication of your children -- they are amazing young people who have all taken risks, shown courage, and changed in the couple of months we've been working together.  Thank you for giving us the chance to create this show with them.  Please give an encouraging word to them tonight & we look forward to seeing you at the show.

Many thanks,

Samantha & Amanda

School Matinée Postponed - awaiting news on re-scheduled date/time

Dear Cornish drama families,

As you know, the school matinée today has been postponed due to the snow storm.  We are working on possibilities to re-schedule and will keep you posted ASAP.

If we have asked you to send in a costume element, would you please make sure it goes in their backpacks in a labeled plastic bag as soon as school resumes?

Re-cap of Dress Rehearsal:

Our actors did very well wearing their costumes for the first time and they are doing an outstanding job with their performances, singing and acting.  Our stage managers and stage hands are hard at work running the back stage (all student-run - a major feat!), and are shortening set-up times for transitions, bravo.   Regrets that the rehearsal ran long and apologies for any inconvenience to your families.  We were under the gun, expecting to perform today for the Plainfield School and needed to complete the show once through with costumes.

This show has had a very short timeline, requiring us to go full-tilt since October, so Amanda and I will look on the bright side of the snow day to give us more time for final final tweaks and polishes, completing costumes, sets and props, and getting mechanics of set/costume changes worked out as best we can.

Please ask your children if they have any questions or concerns about their costumes, props, entrances, exits, etc. that we can field via email today & tomorrow.  (We tried to answer a lot before the Dress Rehearsal, but we know they must have many more after and likely won't have time in school to answer them all!)  And please let them know we will have an even better show for the extra time to rest and prepare!

Thank you the volunteers on hand yesterday at the Dress Rehearsal and at Friday's Tech.  You make this possible.

More soon.

All You Need Is Love

Dear Families,

On our snow day, it would be great if your child can listen to the music & sing along with the following lyrics:

Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
There's nothing you can do that can't be done
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
It's easy
There's nothing you can make that can't be made
No one you can save that can't be saved
Nothing you can do but you can learn to be you in time
It's easy
All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
There's nothing you can know that isn't known
Nothing you can see that isn't shown
There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be
It's easy
All you need is love

Love is all you need
Love... is all you.. need..

Seeking Adult Volunteers to Help at Tech & Dress Rehearsals

Dear families-

We could really use some additional adults at our Tech rehearsal tomorrow (until 5:00p) and Dress Rehearsal (Monday until 5:30p) to help keep the kids focused, particularly for the younger Lower Wingers (whose attention spans are a bit shorter!).

We would be eternally grateful for 4-5 volunteers at each rehearsal.  We have more than 50 in the cast, which is so exciting, and comes with some logistical challenges. :-)

Please let us know also if you can be available before the performances to help kids into costume & make-up.

Thank you!

Finding your child's rehearsal schedule

Hi all,

We've had a number of questions and confusion about the schedule.  The calendar to the right indicates which characters or group of characters are needed for each rehearsal (for confidentiality online, we are not listing children's real names).

*  You can CLICK on the event & a POP-UP box will spell out the details.
*  OR... you can change the "view" of the calendar to "week" or "agenda," if easier to read.

Please scroll down on this web page -- under the calendar is a reminder of how the groups are divided.  You will need to know your child's character name.

We appreciate your help in planning ahead & making sure your child is available when needed (and has other plans when not needed).  Our volunteer staff is half what we had last year, our cast bigger by 10 kids, and our time shorter by a month!

We will do our best to send reminder emails, but it's proving hard to keep up with the volume.

We need your help!

It will go by quickly, and we appreciate your efforts to make this possible for your child.

Thank you.

Tuesday Oct. 27

Hello parents & guardians of Cornish Thespians,

Today Amanda and I joined Lois Buchan, Bill VonG, Bill McFee and the 3rd-4th graders for the Interdisciplinary Arts period at school.  It was so exciting to hear their jazzy version of Santa Claus Is Coming to Town and At the Hop!   Amanda has been taking measurements for all of the children this week, and costumes will soon be spooling out of her magical sewing machine.

A couple of important notes:

*  Reminder:  NO choreography rehearsal tomorrow.

*  Please note - TUESDAY, NOV. 11 - VETERANS DAY:  We have scheduled a rehearsal for the afternoon in 2 groups:
1pm-3pm Santa, Mama, Reindeer, Dog, Children of the World, Nancy & Parents
3pm-5pm All Workshop Elves & Human Toys
This is a school holiday, so attendance is optional.   Please see the times & groups listed on the website:  cornishdramaclub.blogspot.com

*  Yesterday (Monday) music CDs, cast lists, and a printed copy of the rehearsal schedule through Nov. 12 went home to all Upper Wing actors and the 4th grade "Block-makers."   Please look for them!  CDs are of the original classic tunes.  Keys, verses and lyrics will be modified (slightly) as appropriate to the singers, but it will give the children a chance to get to know these iconic tunes of the late 1950s and '60s.

*  Rehearsal information & cast groups is also posted on the Drama Club bulletin board across from the Teachers' Room (formerly 1st grade room).

*  Lower Wing will continue to rehearse in school during music and Interdisciplinary Arts for the next 2 weeks, with a few individual exceptions - please note on the calendar posted at:
cornishdramaclub.blogspot.com

* Any Lower Wing families who would like a music CD, please let me know & I'll be happy to burn one for you.

*  ALL WORKSHOP ELVES, SANTA, MAMA CLAUS, EICOP & REINDEER - Please make sure to be at CHOREOGRAPHY next Wednesday, Nov. 5 from 2:45-5:30PM.

That's all for now!  HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

The round-up after first reading & details going forward!

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Please congratulate your child(ren) for making it through a challenging one-time only all-cast introduction to the script and play!   We wanted to bring the cast together JUST ONCE, so that they can see themselves as a group, receive scripts out and roles, and get familiar with the story and music.  It was not easy for the kids to maintain their focus, but we all got through it!  As planned, we will now move into small-group rehearsals.

There will be a lot of important details, so please take a moment to read each email.  We will also post emails on the blog website (cornishdramaclub.blogspot.com) as a place to check back.

We are offering a Make-Up Rehearsal for any cast who missed today:  Friday, Oct. 24  2:45-4:00pm.  (Cast who attended today need not come this Friday)

*   On all days your child stays after school for rehearsal, PLEASE SEND A NOTE GIVING PERMISSION to their classroom teacher.  Our apologies to families and teachers for not clarifying this requirement today.  Because this is an after-school activity, the school needs to know that you are expecting the change in your child's regular schedule.

LOWER WING:

Until the week before Thanksgiving, most Lower Wing rehearsals will now be during school hours.  The next big focus for Lower Wing will be learning the musical parts with Ms. Buchan, getting fitted for costumes with Amanda, and art and movement projects with Ms. Gadoaus and Mr. McFee.  We will EMAIL again and post on the website when the next Lower Wing after-school rehearsal is called.
*  If your Lower Wing student is home-schooled, please contact us (Samantha & Amanda) and/or Lois Buchan (lbuchan@claremont.nh.k12.us) for a schedule of music.
*  All Lower Wing students are part of the "Elf Chorus," and will be singing the opening and closing songs, as well as the "chorus" parts of many songs through the script.
*  Exception: the "Block-Maker" group (4th graders Clem, Barrett and Duncan) will sometimes meet with the Upper Wing "toymaker" elf groups.  Details TBD.

UPPER WING (& "Block-makers"):

We will begin small group rehearsals this week.  Please bookmark & check back to:        http://cornishdramaclub.blogspot.com/  for the CALENDAR.

 *  Wed. Oct. 22  2:45-4:00pm  Santa, Mama Claus, Joni & Prudence
*  Thurs.  Oct. 23  2:45-4:30p   Prudence, Joni & the Band, Nancy, Emily & Jessica
*  Mon. Oct. 27  2:45p-4:30p    All UPPER WING & Block-makers
 *  Wed. Oct. 29  2:45-4:30pm   CHOREOGRAPHY for Upper Wing & Block-makers with Valerie Newton.  This is very important, as we don't have many sessions with her.  Please try to make sure your child can attend.

Scripts
*  We gave all children to have a copy of the script & ask that they please try not to lose them :-).  We tried to help them find their scenes & give them a sense of their "actions" and "songs," but it was hard with the whole group.  Some quiet one-on-one review at home may help your child get familiar with what a script is and how the pieces fit together.  It will also help you see some of the great classic '50s and '60s tunes our music leaders will be teaching the kids.
Process
*  For a school play at this level, we value the process of a child taking a creative risk, gaining confidence to stand on a stage, and the social process of working with a group over the final product (though we know the kids will do a great job in the actual show too!).  Your encouragement in this direction can be a great help.  "Perfect" is not the goal, and fear of messing up lines, being embarrassed, etc. is universal.  Some children today had big emotions that come out of the uncertainty of "what it will be like."  It's very normal, and together, we hope all of the children will feel in the end that they tried something new and conquered their fears, and we will do everything we can to help them achieve those goals.

Thank you for your support and good night.

Samantha & Amanda

Casting & Table Read this Monday, Oct. 20

Attention Upper AND Lower Wing cast members!

Please come to Drama Club this Monday, Oct. 20 from 2:45-4:30pm for casting announcements, production jobs, and our first "table read" of the script.  We will share information about rehearsal schedules as well.

Parents & Guardians!  Please let us know if you can donate a snack to the cast for rehearsals.  We will make up a schedule after rehearsal schedules are announced on Monday.

Lower Wingers!  As we explained at the assembly last week, all Lower Wing students will have a chance to sing in the chorus and participate in movement and art projects for the play during the school day.   However, some Lower Wing students have indicated their interest in a bigger on-stage role, which requires some after-school rehearsals and commitment to the evening shows.  If you know anyone (siblings, friends, home schoolers) who wants to get more involved but hasn't contacted us, please encourage them to email us ASAP at cornishdramaclub@gmail.com

Thanks to all for wonderful audition readings and singing.  See you Monday!

Auditions for Holiday Musical Start Today!

Auditions will start today for our original '60s-inspired rock holiday musical, The Gift of the Rebel Elf.

All Upper Wing students who would like to participate are invited 2:45-4:30p.  All students who wish to be in the play will have a part.

Acting auditions will start with a group reading of Act 1; then in small groups, actors will read various roles.

Singing auditions will be held separately with Mr. VonG.  Singers will warm up as a group, then have a chance to sing individually.

Auditions will be videotaped for the leaders to review again later (not for public display).

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!  Performances will take place:

Tuesday, December 9 - 1pm  school matinee
Thursday, December 11  - 7pm evening performance

Monday, Sept. 29 - Upper Wing Drama Club Today

Thank you to all Cast & Volunteers who made Alice's Garden Tea Party & Sing-Along a great success yesterday!  (see photo above) We had 27 cast members in full costume (despite the heat!), including many alumni.  The highlight for many was an early autumn swim in the pond!  We raised more than a quarter of our production budget, thanks to the generosity of our guests -- THANK YOU!

TODAY - we will have Drama Club from 2:45 to 4:30 in the classroom across from the library.  We will be preparing for auditions and developing our original '60s-inspired holiday rock musical, The Gift of the Rebel Elf.  More soon.
